WordPress 2.6 Image Upload Issue

By Randy Jensen | Jul 22, 2008

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem, and I’m beginning to think it has to do with my server setup and not WP.

When I click to add images, I can select them, but when I click ‘Open’ it takes me to the login screen. Here’s a quick video that shows a little better what is going on. I know I don’t have to use the Flash uploader, but I want to get this issue fixed, not just put a band-aid on it.

I would love any help or insight anyone can give. Thanks!

**********UPDATE**********
Had someone DM me on Twitter and let me know that he exported his MySQL Db and rolled a fresh install of WordPress 2.6. The image uploader still didn’t work. This leaves two things: the server and the database (maybe the code of the theme, but I don’t think that’s it).

**********UPDATE 2**********
So it’s not the database. I guess that leaves the server or the theme/plugins code.

  • I noticed something that said something like "flash uploader" - are you uploading via a plug-in? Like NextGen or something that uses an ajax uploader, etc? If so, it's possible that the plug-in is not yet compatible with this version of WordPress.
  • Hey Sherryness,

No plugin. WordPress 2.5+ has a flash uploader and the old basic uploader. Thanks though!
  • It might have to do with cookies or the secret key, if you are using one. Here is a thread on the WordPress Support Forum with a couple of different possible solutions: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/188964
It seems a lot of people are having trouble with staying logged in or getting logged in because of cookies and the secret key issue.

  • You're the second person that has mentioned the secret key. I obviously need to dig into that a bit more. Thanks!

As far as the caching issue, I've tested in just about every browser I can get my hands on and it doesn't seem to fix the problem. I am going to look into the secret key thing though.

    Thanks for the link!
  • I'm not having that same error, but something similar. Ever since I updated to the newest version this afternoon, it would not allow me to login. I got stuck in a loop of entering the username/password, and getting re-prompted to login. I checked my cookies and nothing has changed.

Wonder if these two issues are related.
  • Hey Brandon,

That's really interesting. What browser are you using? I read up quite a bit on different issues from 2.5 and 2.6 while i was researching this. It seemed a few of them were cleared up by simply clearing your cache, or using a different browser.

They could definitely be related though. I know a couple other people who are having the same issue. It's good not to be alone :)
  • This was in FireFox. When I tried it in Safari, it worked just fine.
