One of my favorite aspects of Linux has over other operating systems is it’s infinite ability to be tweaked. Sometimes however, you need some serious l33t hax0r skills to do this. Enter Ubuntu Tweak. This piece of software makes it dead simple to tweak just about anything you would want from a File Type Manager to managing your thumbnail settings. Let’s get tweaked! …that came out wrong.
You can simply download the .deb file and install it that way, but I prefer to setup repositories so it keeps Ubuntu Tweak updated along with all my other software. Here is a direct link to the .deb file if you still want to do it that way.

Open Ubuntu Tweak (’Applications’ –> ‘System Tools’ –> ‘Ubuntu Tweak’). I’m not going to go through the whole app simply because most of it is self explanatory, but I will show you a few of the features that seem to be popular with Ubuntu users I know.
Under ‘Desktop’ –> ‘Icons’, you can tell Ubuntu what icons to put on the desktop. By default, Ubuntu is all about keeping your destkop clean, almost a sacred area. If you’re coming from Windows, this philosophy is quite the opposite. The things that most people miss are the Trash bin and My Computer which are both easily added through UT.
The other nice feature is the ability to easily see and change what program opens just about any file type. Go to: ‘System’ –> ‘File Type Manager’. From here, you can tell Ubuntu how to manage Audio, Video, Text, Images and even Applications.
Now there is a ton of other stuff you can do with Ubuntu Tweak, but I want to take a second to give a huge thumbs up to the Ubuntu team. I remember when I first started using Ubuntu and Tweak came out. It was a God send. Using it now? It’s still very usefull, but Ubuntu has implemented many good GUI’s for a lot of the things that Tweak does.
I still think UT is a good app and at least worth a look. I know I’ll be leaving it on my system. Happy Tweaking!
