Some Useful Shortcuts To Increase Your Web Browsing Efficiency

By Randy Jensen | Aug 27, 2006

Who doesn’t want to surf the web at warp speed? There are so many things out there in them there Internet tubes that you know you’re missing something important.

Like that new sweet game at the awesome game site where you hit the ball and then it bounces back and you have to hit it again. Ya, you know which one I’m talking about. The one you were up until 1AM playing because crappy Internet games are as addicting as having the urge to pat a midget on the head every time you see one walking down the street. Yes, you know the feeling.

Well I’ve put together a short list of key commands that will fuel your browsing addiction to new heights. Enjoy!

1) “ctrl + enter” // Have you noticed that a page loads faster when the entire url is in the address bar? For example, enter “google” in the address bar of your web browser and hit enter. Now type http://www.google.com. This makes a huge speed difference because the browser knows exactly where to go instead of trying to figure out what you mean by just “google”. But who the hell wants to type all that every time? Try this instead. Type “google” into your address bar and hit “ctrl + enter“. The rest will be filled in and you will be at your destination at least .8 milliseconds faster, which in Internet time is an eternity…kinda.

2) “alt + home” // I use Google as my home page because I’m constantly searching for something, usually something completely worthless, but something none the less. I can’t stand taking my hand off the keyboard just so I can clumsily move my mouse just to the exact spot where the little house is located on my browser to get to my homepage. Try “alt + home” to get back to your homepage at any time.

3) “F6″ // What’s worse than tying to select a url in the address bar? Why is this crap so difficult. Click once and the whole thing might be selected, or maybe just part of it, or maybe none of it…damn, there has to be an easier way. Luckily, I’ve found what I believe to be the best method. Just hit “F6” on your keyboard. This will put your cursor in the address bar and select the entire url. Then you simply type the site you want to go to, hit “ctrl + enter“. Voila. Much better.

4) “tab” and “shift + tab” // If you’re familiar with Microsoft products this one probably isn’t much of a surprise to you. Filling out forms suck. You fill in an item and then click on the next box and then the next, then you realize you made a mistake and have to go back to the other one. Here’s a way to never leave the keyboard during this process. Once you are in the first form field you need to fill out, type your info and hit “tab“. Messed up on an earlier field? Just hit “shift + tab“.

5) “ctrl + d” // Found a great site you want to bookmark? Unless you’re using Flock, this process has for some reason befuddled browser developers. Just hit “ctrl + d” to bookmark the current site you are at.

6) “F5″ // Ever need a quick page refresh? Hit “F5“.

7) “ctrl + f” // This may be one of the most useful tips. Have you ever searched for an exact string of text in a search engine and then once you got to the site, it’s 50 pages long and you just need to find that one paragraph that has the phrase? Hit “ctrl + f” to bring up a search/find box and search within the page.

*note: you can also hit ” ‘ ” in Firefox to do the same thing…one keystroke could be the difference between life and death, don’t mock me.
8) “ctrl + ‘+’” // Some designers think small text is nice looking. I just want to punch them in the face for making me squint like a jackass. Hit “ctrl + ‘+’(plus sign)” to enlarge text and “ctrl + ‘-’(minus sign)” to make text smaller.

9) “ctrl + w” // Watch out, your boss is coming. No need to reach for the mouse, just hit “ctrl + w” to close the active window.

10) “ctrl + tab” // You may be familiar with the alt + tab shortcut that will allow you to switch between programs you currently have open. “ctrl + tab” will do something similar when you are in a browser that supports tabs, or I guess just about any browser other than IE6. Very handy if you are constantly having to switch between multiple tabs.

Extras: In addition to the afore mentioned, here are a few of the very common ones that everyone should be using on a daily basis.

ctrl + p // print
ctrl + c // copy
ctrl + x // cut
ctrl + v // paste
ctrl + a // select all
ctrl + z // undo (yes, there are times where an undo comes in handy even in a web brower…doh)

Well, there you have it a few tricks to make your browsing experience much easier and much more pleasurable.

…how come word pleasure or any tense of it dealing with the web makes people think of porn, maybe it’s just me…oh, you’re still here, shouldn’t you be browsing somewhere already?
