“Pandora’s Box”

By Randy Jensen | Aug 11, 2006

Anyone who has used Pandora knows that it’s probably easier to stop using crack, than it is to stop using Pandora. If you haven’t heard of Pandora, it’s your basic internet radio station on the outside, with some amazing technology underneath. That technology is called the “Music Genome Project”.

I’m not going to into detail about it, but if you are interested, you can read more here. It’s basically a database of just about every song known to man (and even better, a lot of songs not known) that has been analyzed by a group of professional musicians. Once they have the songs analyzed, they can now be recommended to listeners based on what Pandora learns from you about your musical preference. With my experience, I’ve found that I would strongly consider buying a cd from about 90% of the artists recommended to me.

Now that everyone is up to speed with what Pandora is, what is Pandora’s Box? Well, a guy named Daniel Mackey has created a brilliant program that will allow you to listen to Pandora without having any browser windows open. You simply install the program, open it up, start listening and hide it in your system tray; out of sight, out of mind. Considering this is one of the things I have running in my taskbar on a daily basis, it’s nice to get it out of my way and make room for the other five or ten applications I have running at the same time. Even if you only listen to Pandora on a weekly basis, this little app will come in handy and somehow even makes Pandora better that it already is.

You can get Pandora’s Box here.
