Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error With CD/DVD Player

UPDATE: After all this, the drive stopped working several days later. I reformatted the machine, swapped cd drives…only to find out that the SATA cable went out on me. Once I replaced that, everything worked perfectly. (I would still follow the instructions below to get rid of the annoying DISCover.exe Runtime Error.
*******************************

I’ve been getting a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error from a file called DISCover.exe sometimes when I would boot my computer. It didn’t happen all the time and I wasn’t sure exactly what the issue was. I didn’t have any program installed on my machine called DISCover and nothing was running in my system tray.

Whenever I would get this error, my CD/DVD drive would no longer show up on my computer. Very, very annoying.

I did some Googling and kept coming up with the same answer: Upgrade Visual C++ Runtime Libraries. I did this with exactly zero results.

Finally I went and found the DISCover.exe file that was causing the problem in this location: C:Program FilesDISCDISCover.exe. Instead of deleting it and for some reason having it crash my computer, I simply renamed it to DISCoverX.exe.

Problem solved. Why are the most frustrating problems the easiest to solve?

DUDE!! i fixed it!! thanks for the help!!! but i managed to fix it in a simpler way, or maybe im just really dumb and didnt see this earlier... but at first i rebooted my computer... didnt work... butb after tht i did a system recovery thingy that resets your computer to the way it came when you purchased it, and bam. i now deem an equivalent to the geeksquad. (i dialed em up and they said that it would cost $299 to fix my computer) ahahaha. no way. anyways thanks for the great help!!
  • Jason
alright... well i know what i gotta do now. thanks alot.
  • Yes. Open the computer up. Get an eyeglass kit from any gas station or Wal-Mart if you need to. If you can't open the case, then you don't really have any options.
  • Jason
    thanks for the quick replys,
did you mean for me to open up my computer and look at the cd drive?
because i cant really open it up, i dont think i have the prober screwdriver, the screws are too small...
  • Not sure what you mean by 'can't open the drive'? It sounds like the cable went bad. You shouldn't have to worry about the DISCover.exe. If I'm understanding you correctly, it's a hardware issue, not software.

Let me know a little more about what's going on and I may be able to be of better help.

hey agian, thnks for the advice but i cant seem to open up the drive... and also the DISCover.exe file is gone on my pc, or at least icant find the program... any suggestions? thanks.
  • Hey Jason,

What you'll need to do is open your case and look on the back of your cd drive. If you have a red cable with black ends, it's probably SATA. You can look down the right side of Wikipedia for some pictures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA .

If it is indeed SATA, and you want to try and replace the cable to see if it works, you can look here: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=927&sku;=10152

That's what seemed to fix mine.

ATA or PATA is the old ribbon cable setup ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_Attachment ). My best guess is if you have this, you could still try to replace it to see if it works.

Please leave another comment if you need more help! Good luck!

hey, i have this problem and i have no idea what to do. im only 14 and ive been googling with out any answers. could you explain how you fixed it? with like what you bought and did with everything? and whats sata and ata?
  • Randy Jensen
    Hi Fran,

Is your cd drive SATA or ATA? I ended up replacing the SATA cable on mine and it seems to have fixed it for good. I really need to update this post.

If you need any more help with which cable is which, just leave another comment. Thanks!
  • Fran
It still doesn't work for me. I still keep getting the same error.
