If you’re like me, you have a ton of software on your computer. I install and uninstall different pieces of software daily. One thing I’ve wished I had on the Windows side, that I’ve grown accustomed to on Linux, is automatic updates for all my software.
In Linux, you have the package manager and the Update Manager that takes care of pretty much all your updates. Also ’sudo apt-get update’ is very helpful as well. On the Mac, I love AppFresh.
Until today, I didn’t know of anything that even came close on the Windows side, which is a bit ironic considering most of all the software written is for Windows. Enter FileHippo Update Checker.
In my limited use of this thing, it’s pretty amazing. There’s nothing to install, it’s simply an exe file that you double click and then checks all your software and then loads a webpage with all the software you need to update.
Once you find the programs you want to download, just click on the arrow and the programs executable will download to your computer. If you’re an early adopter, the program will even check software for beta builds. These are obviously only for the hardcore developers and people who really know what they are doing.
After a few initial tests, I’m very happy with where this tiny and powerful piece of software is heading. I would really like to see it somehow automatically install the software after it downloads…however, this is easier said than done because of the way Windows handles installing software.
Major kudos to the guys at FileHippo!
