How To Encrypt Your Keystrokes With a Firefox Plugin

By Randy Jensen | Sep 2, 2007

keyscrambler thumb How To Encrypt Your Keystrokes With a Firefox Plugin I’m always looking for better ways to secure myself and my computer. I use TOR to browse anonymously, TrueCrypt to encrypt personal files, TrackMeNot to keep Google from profiling me, a Clear Private Data plugin in Firefox so starting from a clean slate is just a right click away, https email (login and email browsing), Perfect Passwords from GRCPayPal Security Key,  and multiple other ways.

The only thing I’ve never found is a way to encrypt my actual keystrokes. That was until I stumbled upon KeyScrambler. It’s a simple Firefox plugin (it does actually install itself on your machine as well) that encrypts keystrokes at the kernel level. This means that keyloggers are pretty much useless as long as the software is working correctly.

I’ve been using it for a couple of days and haven’t had any trouble so far, but there have been some complaints on the reviews page.

Overall, however, if you want a quick, easy way to encrypt your keystrokes, KeyScrambler is well worth a shot.

  • Some excellent references to tools and utilities here Randy - thanks for the post. Forgive the cheesy plug, but for those that are interested (and would love a review Randy, since you're clearly interested in the topic) we've created a portable version of Firefox that's wrapped in various security and encryption methods to provide an easy to use privacy-friendly browser. It's called Lockfox and you can find out more at www.lockfox.com

Would love to know what you all think -
  • Question
I already installed TOR. So All these programs you sent me protect me from my ISP? My ISP can`t spy on my anymore?
Can they spy what I send on my email if I use TOR?

    Thank you for your response!
  • Just installing TOR isn't enough. You must tell your traffic to be routed through it. As long as you're in Firefox, you can just use Torbutton.

As far as your email, that would be sent through your VPN or TOR network.

Also, if you're using Gmail, you can go into "Settings" --> "General" tab --> at the very bottom, look for "Browser connection:" and choose "Always use https". This will make sure that your entire session in Gmail is always encrypted with SSL.
  • Question
ISPs are also spying on people... Is there such a plugin for Firefox or program to encrypt all data uploaded and downloaded so that you don't get spied by the ISP?
  • Sure. You could use something like OpenVPN (or any VPN) http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source.html . This will basically tunnel your traffic through the VPN, therefore annonomizing it. This is probably the best way to do it, but it can be difficult to setup for some people.

Hotspot Shield does make the process of setting it up pretty easy. http://hotspotshield.com/

You could also use something like TOR, but this is going to slow down your browsing quite a bit. You can use TOR http://www.torproject.org/ along with Torbutton for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275
  • Question
I have installed , I got this error:
I have installed Hotspot Shield but it doesn't work for me, when I press on the HSS Turn On/Off it says:

    Hotspot Shield New user?
    Download here
    or send us email: hss_win@anchorfree.com

As if it is not installed... but it was installed together with the plugin for Firefox and with the Toolbar...
Maybe you know a fix for Hotspot Shield?

How about OPEN VPN? Does that protect me from my ISP? All VPNs protect from ISP spying or just SOME VPNs?

Do you use Yahoo Messenger? If so please leave me your ID here, I will add it. After I add your ID, you can delete your comment so that not all people get your Yahoo ID.
Or maybe you use MSN Messenger or Skype? I use all of them.
