So I’ve been playing around with Windows 7 today. Figured I’d throw a quick tutorial on how to connect an Ubuntu machine to a Windows 7 share. Quick note, I’m running the first beta of Windows 7, build 7000. Since the network stack has changed very little from Vista, I’m assuming this will work the exact same way once Windows 7 actually ships.
Setup Windows 7 Share Folder
- Create a new folder wherever you want your share to be. I’m going to put mine on the desktop. Easiest way is to right click and choose ‘New’ –> ‘Folder’

- Name your share. This is going to be where you will connect, so I would recommend not using any weird characters or spaces. I’m calling mine ‘myshare’

- Now we need to enable sharing on this folder. Right click the folder and choose ‘Properties’

- Once your in the Properties box, click on the ‘Share’ tab and click the ‘Share’ button

- *Note: you will want to make note of the ‘Network Path’ that shows up above the ‘Share’ button. You will use this information later.
- Once you click the ‘Share’ button, a box will popup asking you who you want to share with. As long as you (the owner) is showing up, you shouldn’t need to do anything. Just click ‘Share’ in the bottom right

Connecting the Share From Ubuntu
Now that we’ve got our folder created and shared on Windows, we need to connect to it from Ubuntu. Remember the ‘Network Path’ from before? Your going to need that info now. You can get it by right clicking your shared folder and choosing ‘Properties’ and going to the ‘Share’ tab.

- Go to ‘Places’ –> ‘Connect to Server…’

- Choose ‘Windows Share’ from the dropdown

- In ‘Server’ type the name of your Windows computer. In my case ‘RANDY7′
- In ‘Share’ type the location of the share, but NOT the share. For me, ‘/Users/Randy/Desktop
**NOTE: Make sure you have the correct slashes. They are opposite on Windows and Linux
- In ‘Folder’ type the name of your shared folder. Mine was ‘myshare’
- If you would like to save this server in your ‘Places’ –> ‘Bookmarks’, choose the bookmark box and give it a name

- You should now be presented with a box asking for your Windows password. Choose how you want Ubuntu to handle remembering your password and hit ‘Connect’

- You should now have a shortcut on your desktop to your Windows share

Conclusion
I was actually hoping to write a post on how to share an Ubuntu Share with Windows 7, but I couldn’t get Windows to connect to the share. I could ping the share from Windows and it could see it, but it couldn’t connect to it. It’s even weirder since I have a Windows XP machine connected to the same share…oh well. I’ll chalk it up to it’s ‘beta’ status and for the fact that I’ve only been using it for a few hours now. But for now, hopefully this will suffice:)
