Connect Ubuntu 8.10 to a Windows 7 Share

By Randy Jensen | Dec 28, 2008

Windows 7 Loves Ubuntu 8.10So I’ve been playing around with Windows 7 today. Figured I’d throw a quick tutorial on how to connect an Ubuntu machine to a Windows 7 share. Quick note, I’m running the first beta of Windows 7, build 7000. Since the network stack has changed very little from Vista, I’m assuming this will work the exact same way once Windows 7 actually ships.

Setup Windows 7 Share Folder

  1. Create a new folder wherever you want your share to be. I’m going to put mine on the desktop. Easiest way is to right click and choose ‘New’ –> ‘Folder’
Create New Folder On Windows 7
  2. Name your share. This is going to be where you will connect, so I would recommend not using any weird characters or spaces. I’m calling mine ‘myshare’
    My Share Folder
  3. Now we need to enable sharing on this folder. Right click the folder and choose ‘Properties’
    Folder Properties
  4. Once your in the Properties box, click on the ‘Share’ tab and click the ‘Share’ button
    Share Folder Properties
    • *Note: you will want to make note of the ‘Network Path’ that shows up above the ‘Share’ button. You will use this information later.
  5. Once you click the ‘Share’ button, a box will popup asking you who you want to share with. As long as you (the owner) is showing up, you shouldn’t need to do anything. Just click ‘Share’ in the bottom right
    Enable Sharing On Folder

Connecting the Share From Ubuntu

Now that we’ve got our folder created and shared on Windows, we need to connect to it from Ubuntu. Remember the ‘Network Path’ from before? Your going to need that info now. You can get it by right clicking your shared folder and choosing ‘Properties’ and going to the ‘Share’ tab.
Network Path Information

  1. Go to ‘Places’ –> ‘Connect to Server…’
    Connect To Server
  2. Choose ‘Windows Share’ from the dropdown
    Windows Share
  3. In ‘Server’ type the name of your Windows computer. In my case ‘RANDY7′
  4. In ‘Share’ type the location of the share, but NOT the share. For me, ‘/Users/Randy/Desktop
**NOTE: Make sure you have the correct slashes. They are opposite on Windows and Linux
  5. In ‘Folder’ type the name of your shared folder. Mine was ‘myshare’
  6. If you would like to save this server in your ‘Places’ –> ‘Bookmarks’, choose the bookmark box and give it a name
    Share Information
  7. You should now be presented with a box asking for your Windows password. Choose how you want Ubuntu to handle remembering your password and hit ‘Connect’
    Enter Your Windows Password
  8. You should now have a shortcut on your desktop to your Windows share
    Windows 7 Share Shortcut

Conclusion

I was actually hoping to write a post on how to share an Ubuntu Share with Windows 7, but I couldn’t get Windows to connect to the share. I could ping the share from Windows and it could see it, but it couldn’t connect to it. It’s even weirder since I have a Windows XP machine connected to the same share…oh well. I’ll chalk it up to it’s ‘beta’ status and for the fact that I’ve only been using it for a few hours now. But for now, hopefully this will suffice:)

I'm glad to see that many of these posts are recent.... I have the same issue as fredtma. I've asked at several forums and noone can seem to help those of us with this issue.
I've tried every UN and password on my win7 machine (not to mention that I have sharing passwords disabled anyway in win7) and none of them will allow me to connect. Help me please!!!!

Uninstall windows live assistant and it should work
  • dirtabulous
Wow. That actually worked. Thanks for the tip.

AWESOME!!! Well,at least that's allowing me to mount my file shares. When I try to install the printer, however, it start to open this computer's network location and then not show any printers attached :(
  • profster
That is simple.... make sure the printer share is setup. I use a network
printer and access it through IP
  • blair
yeah, got my test page in the tray now. WLA was my problem.
  • blair
I got it!!! Somewhere along the way I had turned sharing off on this particular printer!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! BTW, what is(was) Live assistant?
  • Thanks, I needed to use this for the beta release of Ubuntu 9.10. Strangely with Jolicloud (Linux distro for netbooks) I could connect to my Windows 7 homegroups out of the box.

Your instructions actually worked for me. I am able to mount windows shares. I had to mount thru SAMBA, but shares were not showing up in Places>network. With your instructions above now they do. Thanks

Very detail article, I followed step by step.
But I get to the last step where I place the password underneath
    Domain: WORKGROUP
    Password: ******
and it keeps asking me for the password, I don't know why.
I can share everything on all windows machine except ubuntu
  • Maybe a firewall issue?
  • michaelmalone
I screwed up, put in the wrong wacks... and I'm wondering if you know how to remove the share from the places menu.
  • Hey Michael,

This is probably going to blow your mind as it did mine, but there's not an easy way to manage shares in Ubuntu. I'm hoping they add it in 9.10, but I haven't heard anything yet.
