This is one of the coolest and most innovative ideas I have seen in years. It’s a new concept on how to organize your desktop that is based on how real life “desktops” or desks are organized. You really have to watch the video to appreciate the genius of this.
I’m not completely sure if they are wanting this to be a total replacement for the current way we manipulate our desktops on our home computers, or something for special circumstances.
The biggest market I can see is the UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) market. First of all, companies are already attempting to come out with the next big thing (following Microsoft’s Origami bust) and secondly, the computer already utilizes a stylus for navigation.
Unfortunately, however cool it is, I don’t see it getting far with the mainstream computer users. I have a hard time believing a user’s desktop gets as cluttered as their demonstration shows on a daily basis. This would mean that just to move one file, you have to take the “pen” and circle the object and then drag it to move it. This is similar to using a mouse to click and drag, but seems a little more time consuming. Also, trying to get people to learn a new way of doing things is similar to moving a building.
Secondly, would this mean that the mouse would be replaced with some type of stylus/pen? Now I do know people who use Wacom tablets to do pretty much everything on their computers, however this audience is very limited and usually very tech savvy. I can’t imagine the bulk of computer users getting rid of their trusty mouse in exchange for a pen.
I am definitely going to follow these guys considering what they have done so far is pretty amazing stuff and I may be missing the true point of the project.
