Firefox End-Of-Life-ing 1.5 / 5 Great Add-ons

By Randy Jensen | Mar 23, 2007

Mozilla has announced they will no longer be supporting Firefox v1.5 as of April 24, 2007. Make sure you’ve upgraded your system to 2.0 by going to getfirefox.com.

There’s really no reason why you wouldn’t want to upgrade in the first place, unless you’re the lead tech at a business that employs 1000’s of people and you’re waiting to roll out updates all at once.

Bonus:

I decided to put together a short list of add-ons that are well worth your time to install now that you have the latest and greatest version of Firefox.

  1. IE Tab – This really comes in handy when Firefox is your default browser and you are trying to do updates to Windows. The add-on will automatically switch to the IE engine and run Windows update in your Firefox browser.

RE: Apple tells you how to use your iPod to move music onto another computer.

By Randy Jensen | Mar 21, 2007

So I just read an article on Digg entitled “Apple tells you how to use your iPod to move music onto another computer.” After the first couple paragraphs I stopped reading and looked over at my scroll bar. Holy crap! The way I figure, on a screen resolution at 1280X1024, the process takes roughly ten and a half pages to describe (see it here). I call bull on Steve Jobs, DRM and the RIAA.

I took it upon myself to simplify the process…

  1. Strip the DRM

How iTunes should work

Much better…

My New Firefox Tattoo

It’s already started to wear off, but I got this tat at the Trade Show at SXSW. If you put the Firefox logo tattoo on either your neck or head, you got a free shirt. Needless to say, I now have a new t-shirt to wear. Promote Firefox! Support Firefox! Get Firefox!

Sunday Recap At South By Southwest

By Randy Jensen | Mar 12, 2007

South By Southwest LogoWell, this was of course the new daylight savings time day. We made it, just a little late :S. No problem though, we were still able to sit in on some great panels.

10:30-ish

We started the day off with me making my own waffle at the hotel’s little breakfast room. I’m now considering a future in waffle making rather than technology…but that will be a new post. After my waffle-making adventure, it was off to the convention center.

11:30 pm – Design Workflows at Work: How Top Designers Work Their Magic

Our first panel was called Design Workflows at Work: How Top Designers Work Their Magic. The panel consisted of Kelsey Ruger, Veerle Pieters, Bryan Veloso and Jeff Croft.

Saturday Recap At South By Southwest

By Randy Jensen | Mar 11, 2007

Ok, so I’ve finally got some time to sit down and relax and let you guys know what’s going on in Austin at the 2007 South By Southwest Interactive Festival. Here’s what happened on Saturday…

Saturday – March 10

10:15 am

As I’ve already mentioned, we got in a bit late, but we did make it. We went to the hotel to check in, but we were too early so we headed off to the convention center. We had already missed the 10:00 am panel called “A Decade of Style”, a panel about css. Here’s a few shots I took on our way to the center.

More South By Southwest Juiciness

By Randy Jensen | Mar 9, 2007

sxswLogo More South By Southwest Juiciness I had heard about this a couple days ago but didn’t think anything of it. After I heard it a second time, I had to at least check it out…and boy am I glad I did.

The artists at SXSW have put together a 3.1Gig torrent file of their music. FREE. This is your chance to really expand your horizons in the music realm and you can’t do it any cheaper. This file includes 739 mp3’s, yes DRM-free!

You can grab the file by going to the South By Southwest Toolbox site and looking at the first blurb of text on the right hand side.

If you’re unfamiliar with downloading torrent files, I’m going to create a new post with a how-to in a bit. If you absolutely can’t wait, I suggest uTorrent, which is my primary torrent downloader, or you can also try the Opera web browser which has a torrent downloader built in.

Stick It To the Cell Phone-Man

By Randy Jensen | Mar 9, 2007

For the past couple months I’ve been seeing tons of articles dealing with “Confessions of a <insert cell phone company here> Sales Rep”. There are tons of amazing resources and tips in these so I thought would put together a list of all the different stories for easy acces. Enjoy:)

  1. T-Mobile Sales Rep
  2. Sprint Sales Rep
  3. Cingular Sales Rep
  4. Verizon Sales Rep

There should be enough information here to get yourself a decent deal on all those overpriced plans and cell phones.

HDMI Cable Rundown

By Randy Jensen | Mar 7, 2007

hdmi HDMI Cable Rundown So you just got a brand new 50″ Hi-Def TV and now you’re about to build up your amazing home entertainment system. You’ve got your TV, tuner, upconverting DVD player, surround sound speakers, XBOX 360, maybe even a MythTV box to record all your favorite TV shows and anything that will satisfy your hi-def addiction.

Other than having to learn new terms such as “upconvertor”, “1080p”, “1080i” and “DLP”, it’s time to get into the messy business of cables.

First off, let me say, a digital cable is a digital cable. The main cable you are going to need to hook things like your XBOX 360, hi-def DVD player, PC or AV receiver to your TV is an HDMI cable.

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It’s basically the high-def version of the old red, white and yellow composite cables. HDMI has the ability to transfer streams completely uncompressed, meaning you get the best possible picture for that brand new TV.

Richland College Labs Launches

By Randy Jensen | Mar 7, 2007

labsBurst Richland College Labs Launches So we’ve created a great page on the Richland College site that is a huge list of resources for web designers, programmers, student and open source software. You can find the page at Richland College Labs.

The main goal was to really create one site for students that could save them time and money. We’re hoping to add resources for everything that is taught at the college, from horticulture to nanotechnology. We’ll have to see how many professors we can get on board, which will be easier said than done.

If you have any resources that we can add, or anything that could be done to make these resources easier to find and use, please add your comments to the Richland Labs Blog.

More to come soon!

Gearing Up For South By Southwest

By Randy Jensen | Mar 6, 2007

It’s hard to believe but SXSW is right around the corner. Other than battling bad health for the past month and a half, I’m pretty excited since this is my first big tech conference.

I’m not entirely sure what to expect, but I am expecting big things. So far, I know Leo Laporte and Kevin Rose are both going to be there. That’s really enough for me to go. I have nothing but respect for these guys and what they’ve done for the industry.

Other than me blabbering, I am going somewhere with this post. I’m going to try to blog (not sure if “live blogging” is really worth it) every day so everyone can that couldn’t make it will be able to see what they’re missing.

I also decided to create a logo for the site so I had something to put on my business cards other than my face…for once, even I’m getting sick of it. Check it out and let me know what you think.
